Conserving Bali’s rice paddies

Conserving Bali's rice paddies
During my last trip to Bali I was asked to contribute some illustrations to a booklet that’s being created by an organisation called Sawah Bali who are concerned with conserving Bali’s rice paddies and creating new markets for the farmers there. The rampant development and increased tourism in Bali has led to land loss and water shortages which negatively affect communities throughout the island. The unique Balinese method of rice cultivation is an important part of the spiritual and cultural heritage of the island and through this booklet Sawah Bali explain the current issues and challenges as well as their vision for a positive future for Bali’s rice farming communities. This is the first of two illustrations that I’m making for the booklet which I hope will go some way towards supporting the effort to conserve Bali’s rice paddies, you can learn more about the organisation and their current projects by visiting their website
