One of the hardest things to keep in mind when you’re trying to turn your hobby into an income stream is that it pays to play. It can feel counter productive to do something purely for the sake of being playful when surely the thing that you need to concentrate on the most is how to make money. You start feeling a bit reckless, there’s no time for play. And then, when your financial situation or other responsibilities are weighing heavy on your mind, it gets harder to get into a playful mindset which can lead to feelings of creative inadequacy and, eventually, a creative block.
This post is just a little reminder that it’s wise to keep playing even when it seems like your grown-up life won’t allow it. Without being playful it’s easy to get stuck in a rut creatively which is the last thing you need when you’re turning your passion into an income stream. By playing, like I did when I made this wise old owl, you open the door to new ways of working and get a solid reminder of the sense of joy that you get from your work. It’s reassuring in every sense. For me, there’s no doubt that being in a state of play spurs you on to ever more creative projects. So, whatever happens always make time to do something purely for fun and remember: It pays to play!
